Getting to Know the Area
Wallops Island is a six-square-mile (16 km2) island in Accomack County, Virginia, part of the Virginia Barrier Islands that stretch along the eastern seaboard of the United States of America. It is just south of Chincoteague Island, a popular tourist destination.
Chincoteague Bay Field Station provides outstanding multi-disciplinary, educational and research opportunities that celebrate the rich natural, cultural, economic, and technological resources of the mid-Atlantic Coastal region through field-based and hands-on learning, often in affiliation with multiple public and private partners. The NASA Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Center offers an exhibit hall, observation deck, videos and family activities. Free admission. The Visitor Center is open year-round. Located near Chincoteague Island, Virginia on Rt. 175. Wallops Flight Facility is NASA’s primary facility for suborbital missions. The facility launches sounding rockets, scientific balloons and performs aircraft research. Tours of the facility are available for organized groups with advance reservations.
