Naval Station Newport
1260 Peary St, Newport, RI 02841
Naval Station Newport is a military facility that spreads over two different cities of Rhode Island – Middletown and Newport, hence its official name. The facility is operated by the United States Navy and is more popular around the country for the two important schools it hosts – the Naval Justice School and the Naval War College. The installation is commanded by Douglas W. Mikatarian.
The mission of Naval Station Newport is to fulfill the diverse requirements of its tenant commands by providing the facilities and infrastructure that are essential to their optimum performance. NAVSTA Newport will ensure that the highest standards of the Navy are incorporated into its efforts; that all tenant commands will benefit from its continuous improvement; and that all hands will work together to earn and maintain its reputation as the Navy’s world-class Center of Learning Excellence.
From its infancy during the Revolutionary War to its present day technology, the United States Navy has been a part of Narragansett Bay. Until the last two decades of the 19th century, a sailor learned most of his trade on the job. In the 1880s, a new concept of shore-based training for officers and enlisted personnel was developed, and the Navy turned to Narragansett Bay. By 1913, the Navy had constructed a Naval Hospital on the mainland of Aquidneck Island.
Newport is the Navy’s premier site for training officers, officer candidates, senior enlisted personnel and midshipman candidates, as well as conducting advanced undersea warfare and development systems. Naval Station Newport’s mission is to fulfill the diverse requirements of its tenant commands by providing the facilities and infrastructure that are essential to their optimum performance.
There are 1,028 military assigned to NAVSTA Newport, 680 reservists, and the average daily onboard student count is 1,737 with annual student throughput of 11,860. Approximately 4,047 civilians and 2,147 contractors are currently employed by NAVSTA Newport and Tenant Commands.

FOR THE CHILDREN
Rhode Island law requires children between the ages of six and 16 to attend school, with the exception of certain physical or mental conditions that may render this impractical or where the child is barred by a law or regulation. If the problem is not corrected through administrative means, the parent(s) may be held criminal liable and could face fines and even jail.
In 2010, Rhode Island along with the majority of other states, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Education Activity adopted Common Core State Standards that provide a consistent set of educational expectations for students, regardless of ZIP code. When a family moves, a student’s education is often disrupted because the student may be forced to repeat material or learn at a different level at the new school. With common standards across states, this disruption will be reduced — of particular interest to military families. For more information, visit www.corestandards.org
