The primary mission of the Air National Guard at Joint Base San Antonio – Lackland is the Fighter mission, which involves air-to-air and air-to-ground operations designed to support ground forces and to gain control of enemy airspace. Additional missions include Cyber Systems, and Homeland Defense. The 149th Fighter Wing at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, is an F-16 flying training unit that includes a support group with a worldwide mobility commitment. The cornerstone of the 149th’s flying mission is the 182nd Fighter Squadron, whose role is to take pilots, either experienced aircrew or recent graduates from USAF undergraduate pilot training, and qualify them to fly the F-16.

 

Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA) is a United States military facility located in San Antonio, Texas, USA. It combines Army Fort Sam Houston, Randolph Air Force Base, Lackland Air Force Base and Martindale Army Airfield. The facility is under the jurisdiction of the United States Air Force 502d Air Base Wing, Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The wing’s three Mission Support Groups perform the installation support mission at the three bases that form JBSA.

 

Lackland Air Force Base is under the jurisdiction of the 802d Mission Support Group, Air Education and Training Command (AETC) and an enclave of the city of San Antonio. It is the only entry processing station for Air Force enlisted Basic Military Training (BMT).  It is home to the 37th Training Wing (37 TRW) which operates a variety of training squadrons. Within the 37th TRW is the 37th Training Group (37 TRG) which oversees the 5 technical training schools on the base, and the 737 TRG which oversees the Basic Military Training squadrons.

The official newcomer’s orientation at Lackland AFB takes place at Right Start. The orientation is presently every other Wednesday in the Gateway Club from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. During the summer PCS season, Right Start will be weekly. When you in-process, you will be given your appointment. Attendance is mandatory for the active duty member. Spouses are cordially invited to attend. PCS Childcare is available and must be arranged through the Airman and Family Readiness Center.

 

Shuttle service is available to 21 locations on base. Buses run every 15-20 minutes and shuttle stops are clearly marked. Technical school students are the primary customer base, but others can ride on a space available basis. Schedules are available in billeting, base libraries, and Bldg 5008 on Gary Avenue.

Base Population

Lackland AFB consists of 46,577 people. Of these, 24,702 are active duty members. Another 10,131 are DoD civilian employees. The remaining 11,744 are contract employees, and family members. Lackland is comprised of the 37th Training Wing, National Guard 149th Fighter Wing, the 59th Medical Wing, the Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency, the 24th Air Force Wing, 67th Network Warfare Wing, Cryptologic Systems Group and the National Security Agency plus 70 additional associate units.
