US Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads is a tenant unit located on Base Portsmouth in Portsmouth, Virginia. The sector was established with the merging of Marine Safety Office Hampton Roads, Group Hampton Roads, and Group Eastern Shore on July 15, 2005.

 

As part of the US Coast Guard, Sector Hampton Roads has a comprehensive mission implying the national and environmental defense. The search and rescue (SAR) operations are among the most important. The unit responds promptly to any incoming call and pursues advanced search missions. It has a prolific result with such missions. The environmental protection is just as important. Although the oil spills are not so important in this area, the environmental actions are part of the daily routine. There are various ships carrying hazardous substances. The unit is responsible for the results of mass destruction weapons. The troops are always ready to step in if the country is attacked or if some tests go wrong.

 

Sector Hampton Roads area of responsibility covers the Atlantic Coast from the Virginia/Maryland border to the Virginia/North Carolina border, the Virginia portion of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, the Virginia portion of the Intracoastal Waterway, some inland lakes and the busy commercial ports that comprise the Port of Virginia.

 

Sector Hampton Roads missions supports the Commandant’s six strategic goals of maritime safety, maritime mobility, maritime security, national defense, protection of natural resources – and most recently, homeland defense.

Arriving at US Coast Guard Base Portsmouth
Base Portsmouth is part of the Hampton Roads military community. The base is part of Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads and sits just south of the Craney Island US Naval Reservation. The city center of Portsmouth VA and Norfolk VA are within a 10 mile radius of Coast Guard Base Portsmouth. To the southeast and southwest of the base – within a 20 miles radius – are the cities of Chesapeake and Suffolk, VA respectively.

 

FROM THE PENINSULA:
Interstate 64 East to Interstate 664 South to Interstate 164 towards Portsmouth (Exit 9). Take the Cedar Lane exit. Proceed straight to the stop light and turn left onto Cedar Lane. At the next stop light, turn right onto Coast Guard Boulevard. Coast Guard Boulevard ends at the Coast Guard Base Portsmouth gate.

 

FROM CHESAPEAKE AND SUFFOLK:
Interstate 64 East to Interstate 664 North to Interstate 164 towards Portsmouth (Exit 9). Take the Cedar Lane exit. Proceed straight to the stop light and turn left onto Cedar Lane. At the next stop light, turn right onto Coast Guard Boulevard. Coast Guard Boulevard ends at the Coast Guard Base Portsmouth gate.

 

FROM NORFOLK AND VIRGINIA BEACH:
Interstate 264 West to the Downtown Tunnel. After the tunnel, take Exit 7 toward Downtown Portsmouth/Naval Hospital. Take the ramp toward VA-141/Effingham Street. Stay straight to go onto Bart Street. Turn slight right onto Effingham Street/VA-141. Turn Left onto London Boulevard/VA-141 N. Merge onto US-58 East/Martin Luther King Freeway toward Midtown Tunnel/Norfolk. Turn slight left onto ramp. Merge onto Western Freeway/VA-164 West. Take the Cedar Lane exit. At the stop light, continue across Cedar Lane onto Coast Guard Boulevard. Coast Guard Boulevard ends at the Coast Guard Base Portsmouth gate.

Base Population
The team at Sector Hampton Roads is comprised of nearly 480 Active Duty and civilian personnel, 130 Reservists and 1300 Auxiliarists. Sector personnel are located on Base Portsmouth and in the downtown Norfolk Federal Building.
