ABOUT

US Coast Guard Academy New London is one of the most prestigious institutions in the United States. It is the one and only academy with military purposes of the US Coast Guard. The institution supports not less than eight different fields and trains officers in each of them. Admission depends on your merit. The aspirants are referred to as officers in training. The financial side is not important. Every aspect is fully covered by the US Coast Guard, but once they graduate, the officers must perform at least five years in the branch.

The first Coast Guard Academy, then called the Revenue Cutter School of Instruction, was held aboard the two-masted topsail schooner Dobbin. The first class of nine cadets boarded the Dobbin in Baltimore, MD in 1876 for a two-year training mission.

The Academy was a shipboard operation until 1890 when the first land-based campus was established in Curtis Bay, Maryland. In 1910, the Academy was moved to the Revolutionary War fort and Army post at Fort Trumbull in New London, Connecticut. In 1932, initial construction was completed at the Thames River campus, and the Corps of Cadets officially began training here Sept. 20 of that year.

A 295-foot, square-rigged cutter, Eagle, is the present-day seagoing classroom for future leaders of the Coast Guard. This ship was one of four training vessels operated by the German navy during World War II. It was taken as a war prize and sailed back to New London by a Coast Guard and German naval crew. Known as America’s Tall Ship, Eagle continues the Academy’s sail training tradition of more than 125 years.

FOR THE CHILDREN

Connecticut is the only state in the union that still has a Jan. 1 cutoff date for children to turn 5 years old to enter kindergarten in a given school year, meaning children who won’t even be 5 years old until Jan. 1 — four months after the school year starts — can enroll in kindergarten.

In 2010, the majority of states, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Education Activity adopted Common Core State Standards that provide a consistent set of educational expectations for students, regardless of ZIP code. When a family moves, a student’s education is often disrupted because the student may be forced to repeat material or learn at a different level at the new school. With common standards across states, this disruption will be reduced — of particular interest to military families. For more information, visit http://www.corestandards.org/.
