Coast Guard Station Chetco River is located in Harbor, Oregon in Curry County and is approximately five miles north of the Oregon-California border. Harbor is an unincorporated community that is located across the river from the city of Brookings. Established in 1961, Station Chetco River has an area of responsibility from Cape Blanco south to more than 20 miles below the Oregon-California border, including Crescent City, California. USCG Station Chetco River is a part of the Thirteenth Coast Guard District, which is made up of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana.
The duties of this unit include rough water rescues, maritime environmental protection, maritime law enforcement, boating safety, and the implementation of commercial fishing vessel safety regulations.
The station includes a main building with administration, operations, galley/messing, and a lookout tower. The unaccompanied personnel housing building has berthing for duty crews, both male and female, and five rooms for ten persons who live aboard. The station maintains 14 housing units in the city of Brookings.


Harbor is located along U.S. Route 101, which is a north-south highway that runs through California, Oregon and Washington. From Route 101, follow W Benham Lane/County Hwy-817 until you reach Boat Basin Road/County Hwy-824, and then turn left. Stay left onto Boat Basin Road.

The Coastal Express buses travel US Hwy 101 connecting Brookings to North Bend, Oregon and Smith River, California; service is offered every day except for Sunday.


The Public Oregon Intercity Transit (POINT) connects Brookings to these Oregon cities: Grants Pass, Medford and Klamath Falls.


The Brookings Airport is a public-use, county-owned airport. The nearest regional airport is the Del Norte County Regional Airport, which is about 35 minutes south of Harbor, along U.S. Hwy 101.

The Sacramento International Airport is located about 7 hours south, and the Portland International Airport is about 7 hours north of Harbor.

To be eligible for kindergarten in Oregon, a student must have turned 5 on or before September 1. The compulsory school age in the state of Oregon is age 7. However, that number drops to ages 5 to 6 once the child is enrolled in public school. For kindergarten, the state of Oregon does offer an early entry option.

The Brookings-Harbor area has a cool-summer mediterranean climate, with cool winters and mild, dry summers. The average rainfall during July and August is less than 1 inch per month. Located at the foot of the Klamath Mountains along the Oregon coast, this area can often experience warm days, sometimes reaching between 70° F and 100° F during January and February; this warming is called the “Brookings effect”. In the lowlands, heavy fog is common during the summer months. The average high during the summer months is 67° F, and the low is 42° F during the winter months.

CG Station is located in the census-designated community of Harbor; the city of Brookings, Oregon is located just across the river from CG Station Chetco River and offers a variety of things to do. Brookings-Harbor is often referred to as Oregon’s Banana Belt and some winters can have averages of 70° F due to its location on the Oregon coast.


In December, Azalea Park lights up with close to half a million lights to celebrate the holidays. In the summers, this beautiful park has open air concerts that are free to the public. Enjoy the azaleas and scenic trails, the playground, athletic fields, horseshoe pits and more!
