US Coast Guard Finance Center Chesapeake is now a mainstay in the Greenbrier area of Chesapeake, VA. It is the only facility of its kind. And it now has nearly 65,000 square feet of space used to implement U.S. Treasury rules. Employees at this center focus on financial management and accounting. This award-winning Finance Center implements the latest innovations – helping continue to make strides in increased productivity.

Today, the Coast Guard conducts its accounting operations in one centralized location but that was not always the case. Before there was a Coast Guard Finance Center, the Coast Guard had many offices around the country – each responsible for specific accounts. Employees at each of the offices may have had different ways of handling specific accounting procedures. Since there were so many offices spread throughout the nation, it was hard to simplify things so that the same methods were used each time in specific ways. A consolidation occurred and after it was determined that the Greenbrier section of Chesapeake would make the best site, the workload of all 20 nationwide offices were combined into the present-day location. August 4, 1989 marks the official commission date of the Coast Guard Finance Center.

The first years were pretty rough for the new Finance Center, especially as they mostly implied reorganizing the whole system and adding all the information in one huge database. Over the years, the center was constantly improved with the latest technologies.

An important duty of this center is to organize and distribute all money flowing in from the United States government. Every year, a particular sum is allocated to the US Coast Guard. The money must be distributed accordingly around the country and to each base and installation. This is why Finance Center is also responsible for evaluating each particular facility. The needs and requirements of each base must be taken in consideration for the money to be allocated correctly. In order to fulfill this mission, the officials operate in a tight collaboration with the private finance institutions and logistics centers of each base. However, the allocation is not everything. Once the money is sent to one particular direction, the center will follow the way it improves and the way the money is spent.
