Weather/Climate
In the White Sands Missile Range community, the summers are hot, the winters are short and cold, and it is dry and mostly clear year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 31°F to 95°F and is rarely below 21°F or above 102°F.

 

The hot season lasts for 3.8 months, from May 20 to September 12, with an average daily high temperature above 87°F. The hottest day of the year is June 25, with an average high of 95°F and low of 68°F. The cold season lasts for 2.9 months, from November 21 to February 17, with an average daily high temperature below 63°F. The coldest day of the year is January 4, with an average low of 31°F and high of 55°F.

 

The wetter season lasts 2.8 months, from June 29 to September 21, with a greater than 17% chance of a given day being a wet day. The chance of a wet day peaks at 30% on August 3. The drier season lasts 9.2 months, from September 21 to June 29. The smallest chance of a wet day is 4% on April 12.

Cost of Living
The average cost of living in White Sands, NM is 8% higher than the average of New Mexico and equal to our nation’s average. This simple outline of the cost of living index was formulated using prices of: goods and services (weighted 33%), housing prices (weighted 30%), groceries (weighted 13%), utilities (weighted 10%), transportation (weighted 9%), and health care (weighted 5%). Thus, goods/services, along with housing influences the majority of the cost of living index. The price of daily goods and services is a valuable and reliable number to be aware of when considering the general price of the city’s goods. In the case of White Sands, NM, the price of goods and services are 3% lower than the average of New Mexico as well as 9% lower than the nation’s average.

Getting to Know the Area
White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) is located in the Tularosa Basin of south-central New Mexico. The headquarters area is 20 miles east of Las Cruces, New Mexico and 45 miles north of El Paso, Texas. The area offers beautiful views and fun outdoor activities.  White Sands National Monument is in the northern Chihuahuan Desert and is rich in natural and cultural history.  It is known for its dramatic landscape of rare white gypsum sand dunes.  Visitors can take advantage of the many hiking and driving trails, sled down the sand dunes, or camp in the backcountry.

 

Las Cruces, NM is a large metropolitan area and has a vibrant culture and beautiful natural surroundings. The area hosts many annual events and festivals, such as the Space Festival and Bataan Memorial Death March. The Death March is one of the Army’s largest memorial marches and is renowned as one of the toughest marathons in the United States. This trek through WSMR’s high desert terrain attracts thousands from across the nation and around the world each spring.

 

Some points of interest include the New Mexico Museum of Space History and IMAX Theater, White Sands Missile Range Museum and Missile Park, Lincoln National Forest, Alameda Park Zoo, Oliver Lee Memorial State Park, Dripping Springs Natural Area, and Las Cruces Farmers Market.
