Getting to Know the Area
White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) is located in the Tularosa Basin of south-central New Mexico. The headquarters area is 20 miles east of Las Cruces, New Mexico and 45 miles north of El Paso, Texas. The area offers beautiful views and fun outdoor activities. White Sands National Monument is in the northern Chihuahuan Desert and is rich in natural and cultural history. It is known for its dramatic landscape of rare white gypsum sand dunes. Visitors can take advantage of the many hiking and driving trails, sled down the sand dunes, or camp in the backcountry.
Las Cruces, NM is a large metropolitan area and has a vibrant culture and beautiful natural surroundings. The area hosts many annual events and festivals, such as the Space Festival and Bataan Memorial Death March. The Death March is one of the Army’s largest memorial marches and is renowned as one of the toughest marathons in the United States. This trek through WSMR’s high desert terrain attracts thousands from across the nation and around the world each spring.
