Barksdale Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base in northwest Louisiana, USA, in Bossier Parish. It is contiguous to Bossier City, Louisiana along the base’s western and northwestern edge. Barksdale Air Force Base occupies more than 22,000 acres east of Bossier City and along the southern edge of Interstate Highway 20. The base was established in 1932 as Barksdale Field, named for World War I aviator and test pilot Lieutenant Eugene Hoy Barksdale (1896-1926).

The host unit at Barksdale Air Force Base is the 2d Bomb Wing (2 BW), the oldest bomb wing in the Air Force. It is assigned to the Air Force Global Strike Command’s (AFGSC) Eighth Air Force (8 AF). Equipped with about 44 B-52H Stratofortress bombers, 2 BW provides flexible, responsive global combat capability and trains all Air Force Global Strike Command and Air Force Reserve Command Boeing B-52 Stratofortress crews.

The 2nd Bomb Wing conducts the primary mission of Barksdale Air Force Base with three squadrons of B-52H Stratofortress bombers – the 11th Bomb Squadron, which is the training squadron, the 20th Bomb Squadron and the 96th Bomb Squadron. Together they ensure the 2nd Bomb Wing provides flexible, responsive, global combat capability, autonomously or in concert with other forces, and trains all Air Force Global Strike Command and Air Force Reserve B-52 crews. The Deuce provides our nation with strategic deterrence capabilities and devastating global combat air power–anytime, anywhere.

There are 14,581 active duty, reserve, civilian personnel, military families, and retirees assigned to Barksdale Air Force Base.

The Traffic Management Office is the military member’s go-to place for assistance with the moving process. Any member who is moving to or from Barksdale should go to TMO for help. TMO offers customer service and provides necessary paperwork needed to have personal property shipped. TMO also helps with personal procured moves. PPM moves allow eligible members to be reimbursed by the government for moving their belongings themselves. For members who are making their first or last move, a briefing is required.

Any members who have moved duty locations before or are not separating or retiring are asked to complete self-counseling through a system called the Defense Personal Property System. Once the member’s shipment is booked, the member will be notified and a carrier will be assigned to their shipment. When members arrive to their destination, they may have their property delivered directly to their home. For members who don’t want direct delivery to their home, they are authorized storage for up to 90 days. To ensure household goods and property are not damaged during travel, TMO provides quality assurance inspectors.

For members who wish to ship their pets, they must ensure their pets are up-to-date on all vaccinations. Members are responsible for all expenses related to pet shipment and must comply with carrier regulations. For more information, contact TMO at 456-5338, or visit their office on the third floor of the Mission Support Group building at 801 Kenney Ave.

To be enrolled in a Louisiana school, a child must be at least 4 years and 7 months old before the start of the school year. Check with the school for other requirements.

In 2010, the majority of states, the District of Columbia, and the Department of Defense Education Activity adopted Common Core State Standards that provide a consistent set of educational expectations for students, regardless of ZIP code. When a family moves, a student’s education is often disrupted because the student may be forced to repeat material or learn at a different level at the new school. With common standards across states, this disruption will be reduced — of particular interest to military families. For more information, visit

Active duty residents who live on base with school age children now have the option to send their child to any school in Bossier Parish up to the school’s functional capacity.
